The central theme that unites all of Alexandra Manukyan's paintings examines how seemingly separate and isolated life experiences actually disguise the extent of our individual and communal bonds. The "masks" and the accompanying identities we all assume depending on the life role we must play, obstructs the conscious mind from acknowledging what truly unites us through the isolation and chaos: our shared encounters of pain, loss, desire, and longing for serenity and acceptance. The false facades we all manufacture to adapt and belong also renders most blind and lost in a world where the meaningless has somehow become meaningful and the idea of a shared honest self devoid of hidden agendas all too infrequent.

"I focus on combining traditional oil painting techniques with surrealist symbolism to communicate the immediate and lasting impact of technological innovations on the human body and psyche. One recurring motif in my paintings often appears as the feminine form bearing the burdens of worldly grief and mistakes on her body bowing in resignation to a seemingly inevitable fate: the acquiescence of the corporeal state to the encroaching dominance of modern technologies conjoining itself like an apathetic demon of silicon and circuitry cursing more than fulfilling promises of beauty and comfort. Alexandra attended the College of Fine Art and Design and State University of Yerevan/Armenia before emigrating to the Unite States to study Textile and Graphic Design at UCLA. Since 1990 she has worked extensively in Fashion and Entertainment, designing movie posters, key art and sets. This is her first solo exhibition.

Chicago.com launches @Chicago email identity product with BuiltinChicago

Dear BuiltinChicago Members:

We are excited to launch Chicago.com's first ever digital product. It's a privilege to be able to give BuiltInChicago.org members a first look at our @Chicago identity product, available at http://identity.chicago.com with access code: builtinchicago. The site will be open for registration seven days, then we will close it down for a couple months to retool.

We call it an "email identity" product as distinct from "email" or "email services," as our product focuses purely on the identity layer within email-- enabling, for example, somebody with an email such as robert.smithberg224@notverygooddomain.com to own bob@chicago.com or roberts@chicago.com without having to change your existing email provider. @Chicago is agnostic as far as underlying email provider and integrates seamlessly with Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, Live.com, Outlook as well as iPhone and iPad native mail apps. Nearly everything to the left of the @Chicago.com is available.

Additionally, we treat @Chicago.com email addresses like domain names-- discrete, liquid digital assets that have a market value based upon a supply/demand curve we have been mapping out the last year. Every identity is a unique item, and the marketing value of a simple, brandable, permanent and portable online identity is valuable. Prices range from an average cost of $55/year to several thousand $, depending on a name's demand, liquidity, length and other variables (e.g., special pricing for Non-Profits).

We will be launching a secondary market for the identities in April of this year, similar to a Sedo.com or Afternic. Ammar Kubba, founder of Aftermarket.com, is the main investor in our technology.

This is the first real "product" in Chicago.com's ten years, and the amount of support and feedback we have received over the past nine months has been tremendous.

Auto Industry May Want to Look at That Luxury-Car Plan Again

While shoveling out a Honda Civic on Friday morning, I was reminded of my utterly utilitarian perspective on cars. I want them to get from Point A to Point B efficiently. That’s it.

My thinking is one reason Howard Tullman says he believes the American auto industry is deluded, despite its current euphoria over increased sales.

“The thrust of Detroit’s thinking is that they are still speaking to people who have a personal, emotional connection to the vehicle they operate. It’s a complete miscalculation, certainly of any person under 35,” said Mr. Tullman, who has deep ties to the industry.

When I noted that General Motors was heralding expensive new luxury models in its Buick and Cadillac divisions at the Detroit auto show and forthcoming Chicago auto show, the man who has often advised auto’s hierarchy scoffed. “Rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic,” he said.

Mr. Tullman, 66, is a lawyer turned serial entrepreneur, a driven, self-promoting and well-connected pragmatist. His Rolodex may match that of his chum Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who resided with Mr. Tullman during the election campaign while the candidate’s family was in Washington.

He is president of Tribeca Flashpoint Media Arts Academy, a profit-making private Chicago college focusing on digital arts and entertainment technologies. He started it as Flashpoint in 2007 and is now partnered with Tribeca Enterprises, the New York company founded by, among others, Robert De Niro.

Mr. Tullman is a sharp observer of rapid technological and cultural change. At a private dinner on Tuesday, he gave the audience a succinct overview of social media — and inadvertently piqued my curiosity about cars.

His presentation detailed four trends: hyperpersonalization, by which one can direct one-on-one messaging to millions of people; accountability in measurement, which allows advertisers to demand concrete metrics on their results; our being constantly tethered to other people and decision-making information, thus letting us walk through one store while pricing the same products at another on smartphones; and a significant lowering of barriers to starting a business.

“He has incredible value as a liaison between the digital generation and an older one,” said Jane Hanna, 30, the social media strategist for the Field Museum, who attended the dinner. “He’s a powerful voice to connect the two.”

Those under 35, he declared, don’t care much about privacy or accuracy as they give away personal information on Facebook and elsewhere.

Jack Fuller, an author and former president of the Tribune Publishing Company, was struck by “the radical democratization of judgments about accuracy and importance” that Mr. Tullman detailed, while the lawyer-author Scott Turow was not quite so sure people would surrender as much privacy once they realized what they were doing. But this was all after Mr. Tullman told me at dinner his views of Detroit, based on ample experience.

He founded CCC Information Services, which maintains databases on the value of used cars for insurers settling theft and total loss claims; was board chairman of Colbalt Group, which provides digital marketing and economic solutions to the industry; and founded Original Research II, which asked car buyers about sales and service satisfaction.

“When I see G.M. doubling up on luxury cars due to their profit model, I can’t help but think they’re missing the boat again,” he said.

A younger generation wants fuel-efficient, utilitarian vehicles, he said, if they want them at all. The calculation will change somewhat when they become parents and need a child’s car seat. But they will opt for smaller, safer and less expensive cars, he said.

Culturally, Mr. Tullman points to the disappearance of “grease monkeys.” We don’t learn how to repair a car anymore because it takes “a $250,000 computer diagnostic system to do it,” he said. “You don’t learn how to fix a carburetor in vocational ed class.” That’s gone, he said, and with it the realms of car enthusiasts who craved swanky or mechanically souped-up vehicles.

“The few exceptions are Hispanics — the last of the car cultures — and crazy Californians who obsessively paint their cars,” he said. A subgroup of remaining car fanatics is “big-city gangbangers and rap stars with their Escalades.”

Finally, he says he continues to be struck by the absence of women in upper management. “If you don’t have a feminine, ecological, environmental side,” he said, “it will be very hard to address this new market.”

NATALIA FABIA ROCKS OUT IN HER NEW SHOW

Natalia Fabia has quickly established herself as a Los Angeles art scene fixture, with her photorealistic paintings of women in tough, sexy, and girly subcultures regularly lining West Coast gallery walls. But she finally gets her East Coast due with her first solo show in New York, Punk Rock Rainbow Sparkle, which opens this Saturday at Jonathan Levine Gallery.

“A little over a year ago I spent around three months all over New York, New Jersey, and Philadelphia. I wanted to just explore everything, meet new people, find interesting places…I didn’t really have a set plan,” Fabia explains. But very quickly, a theme emerged: “It’s traditional figurative painting, but with my twist on these female figures. They all have this punk rock sparkly attitude or style. And it’s real, even as ridiculous as some of it might look.”

After Fabia recruited friends and made models out of people she met randomly (one of the women featured in this show was a bartender Fabia found in Asbury Park, who was initially shocked at the thought of anyone wanting her to pose), she arranged photo shoots in settings that particularly caught her eye, sometimes styling the women but often letting them wear whatever they felt most comfortable in. She then sorted through hundreds of photos, picking her favorites to use as inspiration for the next step, painting them. “After I go through photos, I then start messing with the light, messing with the image, moving things around, making things bigger, smaller,” says Fabia. There’s also the process of adding in the skulls, rainbows, glitter, and butterflies that are woven into the otherwise natural-looking paintings. “This show means so much to me because of the graphic element,” she notes, adding, “Which I love, because I got tagged as just being this photorealistic painter. It’s great—I love being a traditional painter—but I also love fantasy and abstract elements.”

While it might be a strange juxtaposition, Fabia sees it as a way of truly showing that her models are complex people. “They love spikes and skulls and sparkles, but they’re still hardcore people. Even if the paintings don’t look punk rock, it’s that freedom.” It’s something that she certainly relates to; when she was younger, Fabia was a “little punk rocker,” and she wanted to capture what she sees as the strength of the subculture. It was a lesson she was reminded of during her visit to New York: “There’s a piece I wanted to shoot underwater, and where we went [to shoot it] was all scuba divers wearing full gear and oxygen tanks and flippers, and I had these girls naked with just fabric around them. They were such troupers, they just jumped in,” she remembers. “And that’s the point—this hardcore attitude that I wanted to show through the paintings. The whole show is just about the attitude.”
